I think you would know because when you like/love the person you're with, your joy comes from being with him and the things he do and just his very presence. Whereas if you're only dating for the sake of a relationship, your happiness is pretty random and very much dependent on singular events rather than the person. And you might find it difficult to forgive his flaws and mistake (:
