It's from a poem, I am Vertical by Sylvia Plath.
In the poem itself, being 'horizontal' means being dead. It illustrates someone who wanted love and she will finally get in death what she was missing in life.
I only adopted this phrase out of the entire poem because I'm letting it hold a different meaning for me. I've lived the past few years of my life in a very fast pace; so fast and so busy, I nearly suffocated myself (not literally). To be 'horizontal' for me, is not to die, but to lay down once in a while and just stop whatever I am doing. It's a reminder for me to slow down to live life and appreciate what is around me, and not just to exist (:
